A Practical Approach to Conducting
3 Day Intensive Conducting Course
This course has LIMITED spaces for Conductors and Auditors, so please enrol early to secure your place. There are an unlimited number of band positions available.
Auditors are able to attend all sessions, practical and theoretical, without practical participation but can play in the ensemble. Auditors will have access to all materials.
Band members play in the ensemble during the practical components but will not be permitted in the theoretical sessions throughout the course. Band members will not have access to provided materials.

3 consecutive days of sessions
Saturday 23rd to Monday 25th April, 2016
Morning: Theory 10.00am - 11.30am
Midday: Practical 11.45am - 1.00pm
Midday Afternoon: Practical 1.45pm – 3.00pm
Later Afternoon: Theory/Practical 3.15pm – 5pm
Each session contains two short tea breaks & a lunch break

An in-depth ‘breakdown’ of each day’s events will appear in the course handbook which will be available no earlier than 2 weeks prior to the course.
DAY 1 Introduction to score reading plus fundamental beat patterns, subdivisions and cueing.
DAY 2 Introduction to the art of accompanying and unconventional time signatures (including their beat patterns). Discussion throughout the day of previous aspects and excerpts covered.
DAY 3 Further development of the expressions as well as concepts of style and 'character'. Conducting participants will conduct & perform excerpts of their own choosing within the afternoon sessions.
Excerpts/works to be covered include:
Bernstein - West Side Story, Debussy - Prelude to the afternoon of a Faun, Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, Holst - Suite No. 1 in E flat for Military Band (2nd Movement), Mozart - Clarinet Concerto, Stravinsky - Wind Octet, Tchaikovsky – Romeo & Juliet Overture.
